Characters
Ayla- The main character and protagonist, a self willed and optimistic Cro-Magnon girl with an innocent wisdom to her. 5 at the beginning and approx. 16 at the end of the book. She displays power and reason throughout the story, truly earning her status as a human embodiment of a cave lion.
Creb/Mog-Ur- The shaman of the clan with the ability to communicate with the "spirits."Very deformed, with only one arm and one eye, and is arthiritic in one knee all due to his difficult birth with his very large brain and a cave bear attack in childhood. Extremely wise and loving, thinks that his physical power was sacrificed for his amazing intellectual ability.
Iza- The medicine woman of the clan, first to find Ayla. Perhaps Aylas closest friend, showing friendship and boundless care in nursing her back to health.Uses different herb mixtures to solve injuries, using her above average intelligence to make new remedies. Probably the most accepting member of the clan, showing no yield to Crebs hideous deformities or Aylas obvious different appearance.
Broud- The main antagonist, an egomaniac who always wants to be the center of attention and is corrupted by the Cro-Magnon girls new found fame. About 8 at the beginning and 19 at the end. Shows deep hatred for Ayla and all who love her, undeservingly gets the status of leader at the end of the book and banishes Ayla.
