Setting
In Clan of the Cave Bear, the first thing you will notice is the time period. It is set entirely over the span of approx. 11- 12 years. However, what separates it from other historical fiction novels is it takes place when Neanderthals and Homo sapiens lived together at the same time. Around 26,000 years ago.
The land the main characters live in is very fertile, with a vast amount of landforms and temperature range. Very mountainous, with caves scattered around and wildlife at its prime stature. As said before, the temperature changes very often, freezing in the night and blistering by noon.
My best guess to the area of the setting in modern terms would be around the equator or as far as Massachusetts. However, this guess may be invalid as temperatures varied often in and around the prehistoric ice age, which is close to where this is set.
